What Are the Benefits of Using VR in the Classroom?
As it is more popularly adopted, we will see increasing uses of VR in the classroom. About one-third of the respondents surveyed at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 believe that education is the area which will benefit from VR in the classrooms and VR-enabled textbooks.
Here are some typical advantages that VR can benefit the classrooms backed by research.
Stopping Classroom Smartphone Distractions
Research by the Journal of Media Education pointed out that students spent a fifth of their time in the class doing activities on their devices that are not relevant to their school work. The research also found that students often check their digital devices 11.43 times during class in average. Having VR technology on those smartphones could mitigate the problem. Instead of spending their idle time on smartphones, they would be required to engage with VR software for the lesson.
Bridging the Attention Gap
Edger Dale’s Cone of Experience has revealed that the average person only remembers 20% of what they hear and 30% of what they see, but up to 90% of what they personally experience. VR-based materials create an immersive personal experience that better enhances students’ learning effectiveness. A meta-analysis done in 2014 found that students actually do learn better when immersed in virtual worlds.
Eliminating Language Barriers
In today’s multi-cultural environment, bringing students from all different backgrounds is a real challenge due to language barriers. With VR, language translation can be implemented within the software, eliminating the language barriers for students for better educational goals.
Social Integration of Students
Peer connection is of great importance in any learning environment for students. VR technology can enhance social integration of learners within a classroom environment. Dr. Conor Galvin at the University College Dublin School of Education and Lifelong Learning who evaluated the MissionV Schools Pilot Programme, which involved 20 primary schools, has pointed out that students who struggles to become part of the class group were able to become accepted by their peers because of their technology skills and students lacking in confidence were able to come out of their shells.
