Update March 23, 2020:
In light of the current global pandemic of the deadly Covid-19 coronavirus, the information here is even more important than before. However, a VR cover and some sanitary wipes are NOT sufficient to keep your VR equipment safe from this virus. Check out our
guide for keeping your headset clean
for a detailed explanation.
Here at Bit Space Development, we build VR applications for practical use. Most of our creations are designed for safety awareness and training for businesses, which means that the headsets that we deploy are often used by many different people. That creates concerns about how to keep VR headsets sanitary. The last thing you want as a VR user is to feel the sweat from the last person on your face. That’s why we use VR Covers on our headsets!
VR Cover offers a wide variety of upgrades and accessories for almost every VR headset on the market. The company started its business by selling fabric covers that wrap around the factory foam cushions. The biggest advantage of the fabric covers is that they are machine washable. When you’re done using the headset, just toss the covers in with your regular laundry to freshen it up.
The fabric covers are a huge improvement over the bare foam found on most headsets. However, they are somewhat difficult to install and they wick up moisture quite quickly. The fabric covers are great for personal use, but there’s a better solution for shared deployments: leather-wrapped cushions.
VR Cover sells replacement cushions for many different headsets, including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Oculus Go, and Valve Index. In the case of the Oculus Rift, and Quest, and Valve’s Index headset, VR cover also sells a replacement face gasket with Velcro so that you can use the company’s full line of replacement cushions. VR Cover’s Rift S solution isn’t yet available, but the company plans to have a product ready in early 2020.
The replacement cushions that VR Cover sells come wrapped in synthetic PU Leather, which is a moisture-resistant material. These cushions won’t absorb sweat, which makes them easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth or a baby wipe. In our opinion, a PU leather VR Cover is absolutely critical for any situation where you would be sharing a headset with multiple people. In our opinion, you should get a VR Cover even if you’re not planning to share your headset with others. They are much easier to keep clean.
If you’re looking for a VR Cover for your own headset, the following are our recommendations for each headset variety. Bit Space Development is a VR Cover affiliate, which means we get a small kickback when you buy from one of our affiliate links.
